Hi, I'm trying to bake a gluten free cake for my friend who is having a difficult time at the moment. She is only able to eat gluten free and the recipe asks for polenta. I tried morrisons and tesco but couldn't find it. Which shops normally sell it and which isle would I find it in please?! Does it go by another name?

Thank you!

I've seen it in tesco, sainsburys and lidl. Did you ask?

SunnySomer · 31/03/2015 21:55

You should find it in a large Tesco, I've bought it there and in Waitrose. An alternative would be finely ground semolina (same thing). Make sure it's finely ground, or your cake will be crunchy!

SunnySomer · 31/03/2015 21:56

Sorry - aisle would be Italian (savoury) food where the pasta and arborio rice are

Tesco, may be in the world food isle

semolina is made of wheat and will make your friend ill.
polenta is made from corn / maize

MediumOrchid · 31/03/2015 22:00

I found some in Waitrose

WonderIfThingsWillChange · 31/03/2015 22:09

Thanks for your help and quick replies! I did ask in both stores but both people didn't know what it was and as I had never seen it either I wasn't much help!

Do you have a Carluccio's near you? They sell it. I bought a bag in Marks and Spencer too.

WonderIfThingsWillChange · 31/03/2015 22:16

Great - thank you! Plenty of places sell it then (if you know what you are looking for!) will try again tomorrow. Can't wait to bake this cake - orange and amaretto cake, a work colleague made it once and it was delicious Smile

Nigella has a recipe for lemon polenta cake, it's lush! Don't overbeat the eggs or use 4 small instead of 3 large though or it will have a scrambled egg tinge to it Blush

LadySybilLikesSloeGin · 31/03/2015 22:27

Depends where you buy it. The one in Carluccios is a yellow paper bag.

Sometimes the bags are plastic, like this www.golosinasya.com.ar/tienda/image/cache/data/Arcor/Polenta-Presto-Pronta-Arcor%2030x500g-500x500.jpg

And the polenta looks like this remarkablydomestic.files.wordpress.com/2010/05/polenta.jpg

Italian Deli will absolutely have some too, or you could try a normal deli too as you never know.

Thanks ladySybil, that's really helpful Smile

Any chance you could share the recipe as I have a huuuuge bag of polenta!

LadySybilLikesSloeGin · 02/04/2015 20:53

this one?

RoosterCogburnIsInTheJakes · 02/04/2015 21:08

Thank you.
I have the ingredients, so that's definitely going onto the Easter menu

seaoflove · 02/04/2015 21:10

Sainsburys sell it too, only £1.10 a bag.

I had a slice on the train and I almost missed my stop as I was still eating it Blush Grin Jamie Oliver makes polenta chips but they are not great, the lemon cake's sooooo much better.

No Sainsbods near here Sad

WonderIfThingsWillChange · 04/04/2015 07:24

Here's the recipe I used which is based on the nigella one

www.renbehan.com/2011/03/orange-amaretto-polenta-cake.html

I made it yesterday and my friend really liked it. I now have a huge bag of polenta so will be making it again! Smile

It's sometimes labelled cornmeal. In the whole foods bit.

mimiasovitch · 04/04/2015 07:44

Ah - I see you already found some. I love polenta cake!
