Is it as nice as the one you lovingly stir for 30 minutes? And will it do for a dinner party?

I think it is just as nice. Might be worth setting the timer for ten mins less than the recipe says though do you can take it out and check it's not overcooked. You can always give it longer if it needs it.

How bad is it to half cook on the stove then reheat/finish off when people arrive? Will I kill them?

Yes I've made it and it's delicious! Make sure you've got enough liquid tho.

I think it's OK, but not as nice as a stove top one, because it's the stirring that makes it creamy. Jamie O has a method (which apparently restaurants use) where you half cook the rice, spread it on a tray so it doesn't stick together then finish at the last minute.
