Do you buy 'oven ready' meals from the butchers? Nice?

Our local butcher has started to do these. Meat in a sauce that he ladles into a foil container which you just stick in the oven. They look lovely but are they as good as they look, and are they healthier than supermarket ready meals? He does cottage pies too!

My local butchers doesn't do this the only thing that would concern me is what putting in it but saying that I have no idea what put in their sausages but they are lovely.

If I was going to buy ready meal think I would prefer to buy from local butchers rather than mass produce ones made for supermarkets (I've seen too many programs). I'm a fan of our local butchers

It really depends on the butcher, but yes, better than the supermarket I think. We have a very posh butcher nearby and it costs the earth to buy a ready meal. They are good though.

I live in Scotland, near Paisley, and there are local butchers who will sell you a steak pie, ready to be put in the oven. They will even take your own pie dish, fill it and put the pastry lid on, so it looks as if you have made it yourself!

I haven't bought one of these pies yet, but my friends who have tell me they are delicious - they would pass for home made.

Our butcher does this (as I have just discovered) and I have bought a couple of things - they were lovely! We had a chilli and a chicken and chorizo stew thing.

That said our butchers is really, really good. Not sure I'd be so keen otherwise.

My local butcher has a hygiene rating of 1 star, I wouldn't touch any of his home cooked meals! Grin

In Scotland if you want a steak pie for New Years Day you need to order it from the butcher weeks ahead. My butcher makes 5 kinds of pie, sausage rolls, black pudding and haggis. All of them excellent quality.

The butcher near my brothers does, and from what he and my mum have said is that they are very good.

My Sister's one does very nice pies, but unfortunately I don't even have a butcher near me.

Scottish steak pie - especially the ones for New Year, have sausage in them as well! I was a bit taken aback when I heard about this for the first time, but oohhhh heavens, it is tasty!!

Nearest butcher does great marinated meat fillets as well as pies, ready for the oven. They do cost though. I'd be less keen on a stew as I can do my own and they might just buy in the sauce - but would give it a try. Likely to be as good as a Cook ready meal (their Moroccan ragout is wonderful and healthy - have to check each dish as some are very creamy)
