Deliciously Ella anyone?

I've just received her new cook book for my bday and am very chuffed indeed!

Has anyone tried anything yet? A lot will be experimentation for me as I've never cooked that way before but I can't wait to try (wont be going vegan though!)

Any recommendations?

I got it too and have so far just perused the pages. I would love to make the chocolate spread but I don't have a good enough processor :( Might start with the sweet balls/sweet potato brownies. Can you tell I have a sweet tooth?!

I also need to stock up on basic ingredients like coconut oil, buckwheat flour, and nut butter. Not so easy to get as I don't live in the UK.

Eyespy24 · 05/03/2015 23:07

I've done quite a few of her recipes from the blog. Usually great. Occasionally quantities seem a bit out!

DontForgetTheLightAlesLawrence · 05/03/2015 23:24

I've made a lot of her recipes, from the app/blog.

The energy balls and raw brownies are fab.
Sweet potato, sprout, beetroot and kale warm salad is delicious- love the dressing.
Cashew cheese (in sweet potato recipe) - odd.
Raw millionaire shortbread - didn't work for me. Very expensive and datey.
Orange, carrot, kale etc... juice - great.
Love her book and she seems very sweet, but the jury is still out on some things. On the whole though, I like her.

DontForgetTheLightAlesLawrence · 05/03/2015 23:26

Ooh her nut butter cups are splendid. Love them (and I'm not an especially sweet-toothed person).

wrenster · 06/03/2015 12:52

Thanks everyone. Brownies and energy balls are on my list too!

I'm making the chilli this weekend with black beans so I'm interested to see how that turns out as I adore spicy food.

My h&B deleivery arrived yesterday with all of my store cupboard ingredients. I bought a big tub of maple syrup from Costco too which I am trying very hard to resist opening!

I'll keep you updated.

I use her houmous recipe & it's great. Also like the coconut curry one - think it's butternut squash, but I used sweet potato & it turned out well.

Rocktheboat73 · 09/03/2015 09:00

I have used lots of recipes from this book/app and eat on a daily/weekly basis:
Healthy eating on the go - packed lunches
Thai butterbut curry with brown rice
Superbread (I make this every week) with avocado spread on top
Banana Flapjacks (this has way too many oats in the recipe)
Dates with almond butter
Almond butter (amazing!!!)
Broccoli and avocado salad
Brazil nut pesto with quinoa pasta
Quinoa Tabuleh
Sweet Potato Wedges
Apple and berry crumble
Hummous
Mexican quinoa bowl
Mango and chia seed overnight oats

Halogenaque · 09/03/2015 19:50

Anyone done the lentil bolognese? Keen to try this but not sure what family will think.

sumac · 10/03/2015 16:47

Saw the book for £8 in Tesco last week.

wrenster · 11/03/2015 13:10

I did the energy bites this weekend and the flapjacks. Kids loved both, hubby hated them and said the energy bites were like balls of poo!

About to make the superbread, looks lovely.

Hated the brownies - clearly for people who don't like brownies Grin

The warming bowl was ok - a bean thing, mashed up sweet potato, some spinach thing - all edible

Obviously none of it's as good as a pie and chips...

BobbyGentry · 11/03/2015 13:31

Love the website but couldn't get on with avocado in my juice. Will buy the book in the summer. Liked her on FB so see web updates. She seems lovely & her story genuine. My staples agave nectar, frozen bananas, ginger & bucket loads of fresh veg; tend to juice daily and have enjoyed some of Ella's juicing recipes.

Cecyhall · 11/03/2015 13:44

Are a lot of the sweet recipes date based?

I've developed an annoying date allergy and used to love them making 'caramel' type things but can't any more.

Halogenaque · 11/03/2015 16:11

Yes loads are date based.

Halogenaque · 11/03/2015 16:13

Made the lwntil Bol. Was nice but nothing amazing. wrenster which energy bites were they?

DontForgetTheLightAlesLawrence · 11/03/2015 21:54

I've made the baobab energy balls and the coconut ones. Both are fab.

bluesky · 12/03/2015 07:36

Sweet Potato brownies are hideous, it was just a piece of smooth sweet potato pie. No resemblance to a brownie at all! V disappointing

Potato and cauli curry success

Mango and Cashew Mousse huge success

I like Davina's Energy balls so haven't got round to making Ella's yet

Halogenaque · 12/03/2015 08:46

That's interesting. She says on her site that they are one of her most popular recipes. Did it taste nice at all?

bluesky · 12/03/2015 10:21

My theory (and it's just mine!) is that everyone thinks OMG brownies from sweet potato, I must make those. Ella gets the hits and downloads, but I'd be surprised how many make them again as a new found favourite!

Not nice at all. Just a slice of sweet potato pie really. Brownie is just the wrong associated word for my taste buds and brain!

But would love to know what anyone else thought after making and tasting them.

wrenster · 13/03/2015 12:21

I did the almond and chia seed energy balls and they were very nice - like choc and nut (but I do love dates)

I made the superhealthy bread yesterday. I absolutely hated it :-( I think I should have ground all of the seeds up rather than leave some whole as the recipe suggests. It was like eating a bird seed loaf! Very expensive to make too, which was a shame.

Not tried the brownies but not a huge brownie lover anyway, would prefer cake!

'none of its as good as pie and chips' Grin

Halogenaque · 13/03/2015 13:44

Made the quinoa and turneric fritters. Horrible. Really sweet. Wasn't keen at all.

TallGiraffes · 14/03/2015 06:43

So far we've had
the lentil and courgette salad
Brazil nut and rocket pesto pasta
Mexican bowl
Coconut porridge
Chilli

They've all been lovely - I have cut out a few ingredients though, almond butter etc, as I couldn't be bothered!

Applecross · 29/03/2015 21:56

I made the healthy Nutella and my dd and DH love it, the hummous was great too. I made the easy quinoa and didn't love all the tahini. Must try some more - bulk ordering ingredients on Amazon has left me with 6 jars of tahini to get through

Artygrandma · 31/03/2015 15:20

Tried 5 recipes and very disappointed as it cost a lot to get the ingredients from h and b.
Superfood bread, stayed raw for hours then tasted of stuffing.
Superfood crackers.
Granola.
Bean chilli.
10 min tomato pasta.
Recipes either didn't work or were basic and bland or awful.
The tomato pasta, my DH thought I had poured a tin of tomatoes on a mountain of pasta!

If I repeat the chilli I would sauté garlic, pepper and chilli first and lessen the quantity of carrot.
From what I have read the recipes on the blog are good but so far the recipes I have tried following the book have not worked. I wonder if the amended recipes for the book have been tested?
I will try a few more recipes based on the comments on this thread as I like the idea of plant based eating and I am Coeliac too but there are far better recipes for the ones I have tried so far elsewhere.
