Converting a 2 tin recipe to 1 tin

I'm trying to find a chocolate cake recipe, need to bake it tomorrow for Saturday morning birthday party and all the recipes I've found so far require 2 tins, I only have one deep tin. Can I just use the oven temperature suggested and bake it a bit longer?

I would turn the oven down a bit and cover it up if it starts to look done on top before its done in the middle. Use a skewer to test if the middle is cooked.

Or cook it in two halves?

The recipe states gas mark 5 and our oven is quite cool, so might try baking at gas mark 4. I would try doing it in two halves but it takes a long time to bake so I don't want to risk the rising agents becoming exhausted in the second half of the batter whilst the first one is cooking.
