Elsa's cape using sugar glass or isomalt?

I tried to make the cape with sugar glass but it didn't set. Did I take it off the fire too early? I don't have a candy thermometer and can't afford one at the moment. Is there another way to know for sure when the right temperature is? Also, has anyone tried this or something similar with isomalt? Should I just buy a pack of ready to use isomalt and use that instead of making sugar candy from scratch?

Sugar candy needs to get very hot - it takes about 15 minutes of boiling - when you drop a bit in cold water it should set hard instantly with bit of a crack sound.

Thanks for the tip, pikkewyn.
