Hi,
Making DS a batman cake for his birthday, my first cake making/decorating project (wish me luck).
I'm going to use a Victoria sponge recipe I found here (from Olihan) but looking for some advice on timings and storage pls.
My thoughts are:
Bake Wednesday, ice Thursday (sugar paste) for birthday Friday.
How does that sound?
What's the best place/way to store in between?
Any other tips for newbie much appreciated.
Thanks for your help.

Uma advice is to remember you are doing it for your own child and it doesn't have to be a perfect work of art.

Use gel colours if you can, especially for dark shades and red.

Freezing it before icing works well...stops the crumbs sticking to Icing.

I have a cake box...but if not, wrap tightly in cling film (double layer if going in freezer).

For black, definitely buy it ready coloured.

Timetable sounds fine.

agree on timescale and buying black paste ready made as it is a bugger to colour up.

I wrap may cakes in 2 layers of clingfilm whilst they are waiting.
crumb coat in buttercream to stick the icing to the cake and make it smooth.
I would put into the fridge for 10 minutes after buttercream before sugarpaste.
I add that the more you gently rub the icing with the palm of your hand the smoother and shinier your sugarpaste will look (if that is a look you are going for)
