I was so proud of getting these gorgeous looking pink fillets reduced to £1.25 for 2 a fortnight ago in M&S but I totally thought they were salmon.

Was going to make salmon coulibiac for people coming round, will it take massively different?

I don't think I'm familiar with trout in this form, aaaargh!

I've only had trout a couple of times but tbh I couldn't really tell the difference - I can't imagine anything that would go with salmon but not trout so go ahead! Cook same as salmon as well as far as I know. Congrats on the bargain!

SwedishEdith · 18/02/2015 20:13

I think they're pretty much the same fish. Or, at least, interchangeable in recipes.

CrazyOldBagLady · 18/02/2015 20:16

Sounds like they could be rainbow trout if they are pink? They are really nice, I prefer them to salmon. You can cook them in the same way I should think.

OverAndAbove · 18/02/2015 20:17

They are pretty similar; I find trout a more delicate taste and prefer it to salmon. I usually cook it for a little less time, if that helps

iwantgin · 18/02/2015 21:02

I'd just do the same recipe. Trout is lovely, not quite as strong as salmon, but certainly tasty in its own right.

tassisssss · 18/02/2015 21:04

Thank you all.

I've already told them we're having salmon so I'll maybe just not say anything...!

Smaller flake, better taste, are you going to use pastry or bread dough?

MomOfTwoGirls2 · 18/02/2015 22:18

I prefer trout than salmon too

tassisssss · 19/02/2015 12:58

Pastry

Thanks again everyone. I was just so fixated on looking for yellow stickers that I failed to read the labels!

I make coulibiac over Christmas and it was absolutely gorgeous.
I'd happily sub trout for the salmon too.

CrazyOldBagLady · 20/02/2015 23:06

Hope you enjoyed your trout OP! Please do come back to tell us all how you cooked it and how it went down :)

tassisssss · 22/02/2015 21:45

It was this recipe

was delicious. i didn't actually confess to it being trout as I'd already checked with them that they were ok with salmon!

Now you know tell them there having salmon and buy trout or salmon depending on the offers at the supermarket. If you can get it try Sea Trout it really is better than Salmon.
