Put lentils are a type of small dark green lentil from France. They are similiar to continantal lentils, which are just brown iirc but they are a bit nuttier in taste and hold their shape better. They are the porsche of lentils and are usually condsiderably more expensive but they are delicious.

Thanks carmenere.

I've cooked red lentils according to the packet but they don't hold their shape at all, it just goes to a paste, kind of. Is that right? I might get some puy lentils. What other kind are there?

Bozza · 25/10/2006 09:34

I think that is the case with red lentils delghoul.

DelGhoul · 25/10/2006 09:38

thats ok then, thanks. They taste fine, made into a curry with mushrooms/veg but I would quite like a firmer texture so will try the puy. I needed to buy some more the other day as I do them for dd and the assistant didn't have a clue what it was I wanted and tried to direct me to the medicine section!

DelGhoul · 25/10/2006 09:39

I couldn't find them and was trying to describe it and said they were pulses lol!

Bozza · 25/10/2006 09:41

at being able to buy a pulse from the medical section, do they also stock heartbeats?

The continental lentils are also firmer than red lentils but carmenere says the puy lentils are nicer.

DelGhoul · 25/10/2006 09:46

hehehehe

Thank you everybody so much for all your suggestions. Yes, I'm interested in other types of lentils as well and thenk you, lucy5, I'd love to see your recipy. The more ideas, the more interesting things i could cook and I love experimenting in my kitchen. Thank you!

I really like tinned brown lentils (already cooked so you just have to warm them. I fry some chopped garlic) and sometimes some sliced chorizo and add the tinned lentils to them to warm through. Nice with black pepper and chopped coriander. Without the chorizo, it makes a nice simple accompaniment to fish, esp salmon

i also like the flat green lentils. and babies like em cos they're easy to pick up. pmsl at 'porsche of lentils'.

fedda · 27/10/2006 21:35

Hi, lucy5, have you had a chance to find a recipy for me? Thank you.

...mind you, having read saadia's recipe i might have to revise my opinion that nothing 'truly special' can be made with red lentils. it sounds delicious.
