Which Type of Red Wine to use for Mulled Wine?

Want to have a go at making my own mulled wine this year.

Is it just a matter of using any old red wine?

If you're on a budget I don't think it matters so much as long as you don't use the really, really cheapo stuff. Merlot's good for it - I got a deal from the local off licence of 4 bottles for £20 which I'll be using and I'm going to try putting a few slugs of Jack Daniels Honey as a friend did this and it tasted lovely (even though I hate JD).

i use any red, but not a pricey one, and flaff it up with whatever we fancy or needs using up

so red wine (a bottle)
juice (about half as much as the wine) OJ or apple is nice
something a bit more hard hitting (a large glassful or so) spiced rum, port, sherry, ginger wine, brandy, dregs of pimms...drambuie is lovely
assorted spices....I tend to go with cinnamon bark and cloves as standard, then hurl in ginger/anise/allspice as seems appropriate
lovely little shards of orange and apple slices, maybe some fresh cranberries

often it will need sweetening so brown sugar/honey/normal sugar or even the syrup from preserved ginger

Glug it into glasses with handles when it is steaming hot!

Also mulled cider is nice, esp if you can get hold of the rekordelig apple and vanilla one.

I'm making some this afternoon and I'm using chianti. It's not too pricey and the flavour is strong enough to deal with the other flavours. My recipe at the moment is going to be a version of the Jamie Oliver one ie. cooking spice, fruit and sugar with just enough wine to cover so that it creates a syrup and then straining it off before adding to to a lot more wine, star anise, ginger wine and a good few slugs of brandy

DH makes fantastic mulled wine - he's always being asked for the 'recipe' ('well, sling in that... and some of that...') - and he uses cheap wine-box red. Not the absolute cheapest, but it usually come from the local Co-op.

I made mulled white wine the other day and it was lovely. Same method(s) as usual mulling. Yum.
