Flapjack turned to a big crumbly mess

Made flapjack with DC's today, melted butter, golden syrup and peanut butter, added it to chopped nuts, seeds, raisins and oats, spread out in a tin and baked in the oven. When I took it out it just fell apart into crumbs
What did I do wrong and what can I make with my flapjack dust now?? The ingredients were expensive and this was meant to be snacks for the next few days so loathe to chuck it out.

You needed sugar as we'll as the golden syrup.

The sugar melts, then hardens again. Without sugar it doesn't set (as you have discovered).

Use as a crumble topping for fruit, yogurt, ice cream. Or sundae - layers of fruit, yogurt and crumble. Or custard.

Just wondering if it cooked for too long?

I do i without sugar, but I add eggs. That holds it together.

Condensed milk. Look for Soupdragon's recipe on here - it's the best flapjack recipe ever.

Use it as a topping on stewed fruit, like a crumble.

Or with natural yoghurt.

Hmmm, not sure the Dc's will go for crumble topping on stewed fruit / yogurt etc I'll have to eat it all myself it tasted delicious just doesn't hold together at all, was only in the oven for ten mins so don't think it was too long. Could I use it as a granola for breakfast or will that not work?
So sugar, eggs or condensed milk? I thought the syrup would make it nice and chewy. That'll teach me for winging it instead of following a recipe, will search for the recommended one on here.

You could turn it into a base for something, like a souped - up cheesecake?
Or, you could melt chocolate and mix together to make truffley or nuggetty things?

Or just enjoy with ice cream. And maybe banana.

Find soup dragons recipe using condensed milk. Makes the absolute best flapjacks. I don't add any sugar and throw in a full spin off sr flour and punch of salt and squeeze of lemon. They taste amazing.

Oh dear spoon of sr and pinch of salt. Cringe!

Was it an actual recipe? I have tried so many flapjack recipes over the years and they invariably come out rock hard or fall to bits. Even when I have been given the instructions by friends after eating their delicious perfectly textured flapjacks.

Mine is always crumbly and alarming when warm, but goes solid when cold - was yours cooled or fresh from the oven?

I have to disagree about the condensed milk recipe, that was the only time I have ever made flapjack that has gone straight in the bin, all four of us thought it was inedible.

My favourite recipe is

250g oats or other dry ingredients
150g butter
75g golden syrup
75g sugar.

Melt the sugar, syrup and sugar together, stirr in the dry ingredients, press into lined tin, bake for 25 mins at 175C.

Is the condensed milk one not incredibly sweet?? We did just end up eating it with a spoon and some yogurt and it was delicious! Will try the recipe above next (sorry on iPad can't see username )

The first time I made the condensed milk recipe it was disgusting, but I made it again yesterday and it all been scoffed now! I think I didn't cook out the condensed milk enough the first time - it looked like fudge this time before I out the oats in.

Maybe I didn't cook it for long enough either, I can't remember what the texture was like but it tasted of condensed milk and I assumed it would caramelise and not have that taste (I hate condensed milk).

Silversixpence you made the flapjack in my op?? Without the sugar?? And it didn't turn into a big crumbly mess?? How did that happen?!
