Joking why?
I am cautious I know but I heard a story about a four year old choking to death on a cherry tom whilst at nursery.
I keep putting them whole in her lunch box then I just have to go back and cut them in half

dd is 20 months and I don't chop them up!

hulababy · 29/09/2006 10:19

Because of the recent threads on MN, for DD's school snack, I have started cutting grapes in half again. She's 4y5m. Had never thought about it before. I don't cut cherry tomatoes up though as they are normally not small enough to be eaten whole.

Caribbeanqueen · 29/09/2006 10:21

Dd is three and I only just stopped cutting them up. If they are really big grapes, I still do.

Can't help myself.

jimmy2 · 29/09/2006 10:23

My DS is nearly 3 & I now cut large grapes in half as I have heard a number of stories about children choking on grapes. I also don't bother with cherry tomatoes unless really small.

crunchie · 29/09/2006 10:25

I have never cut them up, tbh. Not even when they were little. But then DD2 has never knowingly eaten a grape or cherry tomato in her life (she is 5)

Piffle · 29/09/2006 10:34

dd is 4 next month and I chop them up
I know someone who's son died from choking on a grape and he was 5.
My aunt also died choking on a nut, so I am particularly careful. But I was brought up with it

blueamema · 29/09/2006 11:28

maybe im crazy but dd is now 12mths and she has loved grapes since about 5mths, finstly i chopped and even peeled the grapes as she would not swallow them with the skin on.
but i have been giving her them whole and skinned since about 7mths! she never has them without me there!

But i am now panicking that im a bad mum after reading what others have put!!

PcCOD · 29/09/2006 11:34

15

elfmum · 29/09/2006 11:44

also give whole grapes and cherry tomatoes my dd loves both and has been eating since about 9 months. had no idea could cause choking but dd likes to bite them first and suck out good bits and then spits out any bits that aren't acceptable. have noticed she's very good at keeping things in side of cheek until soggy enough to swallow

alligator · 29/09/2006 12:03

I insist dd bies grapes and toms in half when eating or even cuts them up herself (she likes doing that). Lazy? Moi?

WigWamBam · 29/09/2006 12:08

I've never cut them up. It wasn't until I found MN that I read that you ought to - but as dd was 3.5 then and I'd never cut them up before, I didn't bother starting.

ChiefSuptGobbledigook · 29/09/2006 12:16

I still cut them up for ds1 who is 5.5 - mainly because I'm chopping them anyway for the younger two.

The other week my friend nearly lost her little boy who was choking on a 10p - he is big 5.5 year old. Luckily the paramedics arrived quickly.

I was getting complacent till then but now I'm on high alert again.

jabberwocky · 29/09/2006 12:18

Ds has always been rather easily choked/gagged on things so I still do. He's 3.

gegs73 · 29/09/2006 13:01

I cut them up, ds is 2.4. There have been 2 instances of 3yos choking to death within a 5 mile radius of where I live. Only takes a minute.

NAB3 · 29/09/2006 13:18

I had stopped cutting grapes and cherry toms up for my child but after reading about 2 three year olds who had died after choking on a grape in one week, I have started cutting them up again. My children are 5 and 3. The baby (15months) won't eat them at the moment.

lucy5 · 29/09/2006 13:26

My dd is nearly 6 and I still cut them up.

ledodgyrobespierre · 29/09/2006 13:28

I always cut cherry tomatoes up because that's what I always do in a salad anyway have recently gone back to cutting grapes up due to a thread on here about a 3 year old choking to death.

albatros · 29/09/2006 13:50

I'm glad I am not a neurotic mum who is over reacting and others still cut them up.

DS is 4 and I still cut both up!

CJinSussex · 29/09/2006 13:54

For info: the recent grape scare story involved a boy of 2(?) who suffered brain damage as a result of choking on a whole grape. There are quite a few cases per year of children under 33 mths choking on grapes etc.

The consultant told the parents that grapes are particularly problematic because of shape & texture. Once in the airway they are very hard to cough up. The heimleich manoeuvre won't always clear them either.

I still halve grapes & cherry tomatoes for 2 & 3 yo but not for 4yo.

kid · 29/09/2006 13:54

My DC are 4 and 7, I have never cut them up.

terramum · 29/09/2006 14:28

I think I stopped cutting grapes for DS (now 26 months) when he was 12 months, maybe sooner. Never cut up cherry toms as he has only just started eating them.
