I would love to cook authentic Indian and or Chinese dishes without resulting to jars. Can any of you clever people advise on a book/s I could use? I'm pretty competent as a cook so I'm not scared of anything too heavy or advanced. Thanks!

Definitely try Charmaine Solomon's Complete Asian Cookery - I've had my copy for decades and still use it regularly. It's a hefty thing but endlessly fascinating and covers a lot of Asian cuisines in great detail and is aimed very much at home cooking. Never had a dud recipe.

I like:

My go-to books are:

Madhur Jaffrey's Ultimate Curry Bible (these are curries from all around the world)
Madhur Jaffrey's Curry Easy - great book and you get very good results fairly quickly.
Malika Basu's Miss Masala - google this as this started out as a blog and you can try quite a few of her recipes out. This is usually about a fiver off The Book People.

Anything by Fuschia Dunlop and Ken Hom for Chinese.

I like the recipes in Anjum Annand's Indian Every Day.

For Chinese, I like anything by Fuchsia Dunlop.

I have Yan-Kit's classic Chinese cookbook. It looks very authentic to me, and I am Chinese (albeit second generation immigrant) and the dishes in there are very much what my mother used to cook. It's a relatively small book. Good for competent cooks, not beginners.

Thanks so much for all your suggestions, I'll start making my kindle want list out!
