Right i'm jumping the gun a bit and assuming that my dd may possibly be anemiac. Therefore i want to make a note of which foods are rich in iron. I know that i do know the answer to this, but my mind has gone blank.
The only ones i can think of are red meat, which never goes dwon well in our house and spinach which was refused a while ago.

you don't get much out of spinach anyway apparently. Does she eat eggs? (Chocolate is good!)

JanHR · 01/04/2004 21:08

Oily fish

Was going to say Guinness but then realised it's for your daughter. A lot of breakfast cereals are enriched with iron. And eggs. By the way, nutty, did you know that you must give vitamin C with the iron to enable it to be absorbed by the body easily? So, for example, if you give her scrambled eggs, or cereal, give her a big glass of orange juice with it too.

No, white meat isn't as good (iron content by serving):

Lamb, roast average portion 2.8
Pork, roast lean, average portion 1.1
Chicken, white meat, average portion 0.4
Chicken, dark meat, average portion 0.8

but beefburgers are good:

Beefburger, quarter pounder 2.2

mummytojames · 01/04/2004 21:36

cheers jan was told by hv because ds wouldnt take red meat dont worry white was just as good

Kayleigh · 01/04/2004 21:39

"but beefburgers are good"

I love this thread. McDonalds and chocolate are a good diet. Marvellous.

Janh · 01/04/2004 21:47

mtj, could be they're comparing a quarterpounder with a couple of slices of chicken (doesn't say what a portion is!)

White meat is better than nowt but does have less iron however you look at it though.

Just to second the vit c - without it its not much good going down the iron rich food route. You need 60mg a day, althouigh this is adult levels (can't find RDA for children). (check your multivit tablets) and don't forget fruits and vegetables, especially blackcurrants, oranges, broccoli, cabbage, potatoes (with skins on only) and chillies. Remember it is easily destroyed by heat, light and freezing - try to eat fresh, uncooked fruit and vegetables for maximum vitamin C.

Also don't forget most cereals are fortified with iron...

Thanks again for all the advice everyone.
That web site is really good Janh thanks for that.
I am going to make a list of what she eats and then see what changes i can make.
