What to do with loads of plums?

I've got loads of plums. Ideally I'd like to make fruit juice but can I just wash them, chop them and chuck them in the magi mix? If I can, can I also freeze it if I make too much?

I'd be grateful if anyone knows the answer!

I don't see why not. Certainly freezing plum puree would be OK, but you would have cooked them by then.

I would also make some plum gin or plum brandy if you've got a couple of kilner jars spare. It's absolutely delicious!

Can you make prunes from them by drying them out in a low oven?

You prick them and add a load of sugar then cover them with whatever spirit, then store it away for a few months after shaking to dissolve the sugar.
There are some decent recipes online. I did it last autumn and it was absolutely amazing. (Didn't leave it long enough though!) Blush

Plum and ginger crumble - just add a couple of tsp of ground ginger to the crumble mix. So good!

No idea re juice, but they make a lovely crumble - put some flaked almonds on top, and shove a glug of Amaretto into the custard.

Never tried it but have just read about Pickled Plums in Nigellas Domestic Goddess. Has a Japanese sourness which goes well with cold meats she says.

I freeze them whole in plastic bags and make jam, hoisin sauce and crumble later when I have more time. Plums make a nice sorbet too.

I made plum butter last year. Very nice. Otherwise I half, stone and freeze for when inspiration strikes. Have made plum jam and plum chutney in the past.

This year I've made a few cordials with fruit from my garden as a change. A couple of years ago I went a bit nuts and made over 200 jars of jam in the summer (we have a lot of fruit trees) and we've still got quite a few left! So I try and be a bit more creative now.

For juice I think you'd need a juicer, not sure whizzed fruit would give you juice, more like an uncooked puree?

Where are you pp with plums already? Ours are a few weeks off even though the poor trees are breaking under the load already I am counting on that time to make some room in the freezer.

I make plum wine. In fact I have a blackcurrant and plum wine on the go, and will make plum wine with the ones from the next few weeks, win blackberries added for colour. With the amount of olums coming, possibly a good 5 gallons of the stuff.

Plums freeze really well, I halve and stone, freeze on a tray then bag. They are very versatile done this way I find.
