I'm not even joking. I can do toast but whenever I try to butter bread all the bread breaks and I just end up with horrible lumps of butter everywhere and holey bread Hmm

why can't I butter bread?

Cut a lump off and stick it in a Tupperware box for your own bread, pop the rest back in the fridge for OH. You'll never look back! Grin

I think it's time to let him butter his own bread!

mousmous · 14/06/2014 18:02

buy proper bread?
this doesn't happen with my homemade one.

Hurr1cane · 14/06/2014 21:12

What's proper bread?

bread that doesn't break when buttered?
dunno, find shop bought bread too soft, I like it a bit more dense.

coffeeinbed · 14/06/2014 21:17

No no no!
I like my butter cold, nothing worse than warm butter.

Just shave it off the block, very very thinly and put on bread.

It's OK when the toast is hot and it's melting, otherwise it must be cold.

I can't either and DH can. I'm afraid it's down to patience. DH does everything carefully and very slowly indeed. I....don't.

Lakeland sell a double sided stainless steel butter dish. This keeps the butter at a pretty ambient temp out of the fridge and it doesn't go off.
Great for buttering bread!

also freezing the butter helps.
as in freeze the butter and then thaw it. it's softer then.

I can't butter bread either. I've never eaten butter so on the rare occasion I have to do it, I make a right mess of it. DP always has to do his own!

Hurr1cane · 15/06/2014 07:36

I don't have time to be making my own bread just for DP, he's lucky I'm bothering to even butter it haha

Use the back of a spoon instead of a knife. You can spread even cold butter more easily this way.

jnl0612 · 15/06/2014 08:09

Definitely use the back of a spoon.. I second that... My family looked at me a bit Shock but don't knock it until you have tried it

Hurr1cane · 15/06/2014 10:48

Ooo I'll try the back of a spoon then! Thanks

Stick the butter knife in a cup of boiling water for a few seconds, this works every time, even if the butter has been in the fridge.

I take it that you are not putting your bread in the fridge. If you put bread in the fridge, it will tend to break up more easily. Bread out, butter out, all out! Echo MrsSmith79, buy block butter, cut some off for you in a butter dish and leave the rest in the fridge. The only time we ever put opened butter in the fridge is if we go away for more than a weekend. Otherwise, always out even when temperature at 28 deg.C ish.
