Feeling fed up - my cakes don't rise!

Just made a second Mary Berry tray bake. Followed recipe exactly and used the tin she recommended, but the cake it only 1cm high which can't be right! It looks so flat and uninspiring! Whenever I bake cakes they never rise - I don't know what I am doing wrong!

What method are you using? Are the ingredients in date? (Eg baking powder) what method are you using, are you knocking all the air out accidentally?

I love baking (I sell cakes for a living) and am more than happy to try and help with a little more info :)

Are all your ingredients at room temp before you start?

Might be a silly question but did you remember to put the extra baking powder in the mix as if I remember correctly the tray bake is the one where you throw everything in a bowl and mix ? It needs the baking powder and the self raising flour to rise .
