Planning to bake some fairy cakes / chocolate fairy cakes and have a large tub of coconut oil and no butter.

Will it work?

It might do. Google it and see if you can find any recipes. Then come back and tell me. Grin

Yes it works fine. Slightly different taste but still delicious.

It worked Smile

Used my old faithful 3s fairy cake recipe, 3 eggs, 3oz each of SR flour (replaced 1oz with cocoa powder for choc cakes), coconut oil and sugar (actually I always reduce sugar by at least a third) and handful each of white and milk choc chunks and they tasted fine.

The raw mixture was very coconutty but flavour wasn't really noticeable when they were baked, will use it again.

I made DS a dairyfree chocolate birthday cake by replacing the butter with coconut oil. It was lush and the very subtle coconut flavour complimented the chocolate flavour nicely.
