A friend has told me it's important to wash vegetables even after peeling them because they are so tainted by pesticides/chemicals. Is she right?

er, what would you be washing off? Buy organic if worried about the pesticide residue because only way to reduce it is by peeling deeper.

Some supermarkets are said to use their own sprays on displayed produce but this will only be superficial. Like bagged salad washing in such heavily chlorinated water that you really should wash it before eating.

I don't know if she's right or not, but I would consider that a bit too fussy.
I hardly wash veg at all though, so I def wouldn't if I'd already peeled it Grin

I never have.

And still appear to be here.
