Are you fussy about where you buy chicken?

On a whim I just bought chicken breasts for my nye dinner party from the back butcher section of a small local Indian supermarket/newsagent. They seemed quite busy, so must be fine surely? I usually buy from supermarkets-so labelled, best before dated etc. He said it is fresh so wash again before use which freaked me out slightly. Is it fine, am I being silly? Please tell me my chicken will be perfect!

Well, yes, I am fussy and to be honest, I wouldn't serve newsagent bought chicken to guests. Can you freeze it for another day?
Wrong answer? Sorry.

Er, not sure how I would feel about this.

Is it free-range?

And what is with the washing? Does he mean there might be feathers, or that it hasn't been cleaned since being killed?

Very fussy I'm afraid - from a welfare standpoint normally but def wouldn't but without BBE dates on it either

You don't ever wash chicken.

Did they cost you much? Could you just throw them away and buy fresh ones tomorrow?

You don't ever wash chicken
you don't? why ever not?
I always wash a whole chicken before I use it , isn't that normal food hygiene?
tbh OP those chicken breasts probably come from a big box of halal chicken breasts and from a welfare point of view will be no different to what is on sale in the supermarket.

NigellasDealer · 30/12/2013 21:07
  • depending on your viewpoint that is Grin

Oh no I've cooked them now! Actually they looked quite nice once I got them out of their plastic bag! If chicken can look nice. Think they buy fresh and butcher there. Hope it tastes ok! Was a sign saying something about catering so I think restaurants buy from them so was justifying it thinking I probably would eat in a restaurant without thinking about it. They were cheap £6.77 for 6 large breasts.
