Why are my onions not caramelising?

They've been on ages, have sugar in, have gone soft and a bit sticky, but will not go brown! What am I doing wrong? I need to save this batch, I can't start again!

Try removing half from the pan. Perhaps there are too many in the pan and they are sweeting rather then browning. Also remove some of the liquid.

Add a little salt to draw moisture out and they should caramelise, well this is what I do :)
