Depends how the thing is cooked

DropYourSword · 21/12/2013 02:58

I don't think that would work TBH.

RiaOverTheRainbow · 21/12/2013 03:00

It would just melt when it's baked.

AdoraBell · 21/12/2013 03:17

Thank you.

Mary Berry uses butter...

WillSingForCake · 21/12/2013 07:33

It does work! I used Mary Berry's mincemeat recipe which uses butter rather than suet, and my mince pies taste great!

SanityClause · 21/12/2013 07:43

My grandmothers recipe uses butter. Three of my family are dairy intollerant, so we actually use a dairy free olive oil spread.

Nigella does one with cooking apples and no fat which is my go to recipe

Onykahonie · 21/12/2013 18:23

Yes, I've used block butter in mincemeat and it was fine.

MrsLettuce · 21/12/2013 18:41

Yup, butter here as standard too. I use 1/2 the given suet weight of butter IYSWIM.

AdoraBell · 21/12/2013 21:14

Thanks again.

Glorious I have Nigella's recipe bubbling away as I type Xmas Grin.

Yay, glad to be of service Smile

mrspremise · 22/12/2013 08:16

Suet 'melts away when baked' too, Ria! Grin Shove the butter in the freezer for a bit and then grate it to make it easier to mix through thoroughly.

IrisWildthyme · 22/12/2013 08:19

Was about to add what mrspremise said - freeze it and grate it, and it's fine as a substitution.

Shows how much attention I pay when I'm shoving them in my gob Xmas Blush

JamNan · 22/12/2013 10:18

I cooked mine (with suet) in the slow cooker and it's come out like toffee. Xmas Blush
