Making monk fish with ginger, chilli, coconut milk on Saturday for 2 friends. Supposed to wrap all the ingrediants in a banana leaf. Finally found a place that sells them and they are £2.40 a leaf. Receipe says you can use tun foil but the leaf would obviously look so much better.

However on 1 salary at the moment and £2.40 x 4 plus the monkfish and all the other things for a 4 course meal for 4 people is not going to be cheap. I do hate scrimping and saving and presentation is so important. Silly but I just don't know what to do!

What do you reckon - scrap the cheeses (the 4th course) and buy banana leaves or use tun foil and buy a couple of nice cheese to have with the very nice port I already have?

You're all great - but guess what - I bought banana leaves!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I went to Foon lung - like Costco but it's all oriental, and bought one bag on banana leaves - £2.60 and thre's about 6 MASSIVE leaves in there! SORTED. So happy, no comprising. All the coconut milk will probably leak out and it'll be a disaster of course but hey ho! I will let you all know!

Belly of pork - ummmmmmmmmmmmm, I LOVE it, oh an don't get me started on crackling - but pregnant friend who I'm cooking for hates pork above all else so a non-starter.

I think your original banana leaf vendor must have been ripping people off.

Just think - now you have 2 extra banana leaves. Could make an exotic table decoration (or use as a tropical style umbrella.

Think recipe sounds delicious btw. And you are all going to be v drunk...

I'm thinking of wearing the space banana leaves, thought it would make a fetching bustier. Either that of using the 2 spare as curtains!

LOL Thomacat, but you could be practical (how boring am I ?) becuase apparently they freeze quite well.

On second thoughts, wear them & I hope you all have a great evening.

If i froze them I'd find them still there in a years time but forget what they were and try and make a stew out of them or something.

You now my thoughts on spring cleaning your freezer and making a meal out of it in one go!!!

No the banana leaves are a one time wonder!
