AKA my Mother.....

Asked me why i bother buying Organic yoghurts "Do you know what goes in them?" says she. Errrr "yeeees?" says I.

"How do you REALLY know? They are full of all kinds of crap and you would never know"

"Anyway, its in a plastic pot for a start". Er, im not so bothered about the environmental effects (disregarding the fact that most of my rubbish goes in my recycle bins) "They arent full of additives and preservatives like the other sugar filled stuff".

"How do you know what they put in it? If you really want organic, you go to the shops, buy some fruit and mush it up and put THAT in a yoghurt".

So, there you have it. Dont trust Organic companies. Why? Because my Mum says so.....

lol
There is weird shit in all flavoured youghurts though.
Safest bet is plain.

My MIL believes I only buy organic fruit and veg because I can't be bothered washing fruit. (Because, yeah, they don't use fertilizer aka poo on organic stuff. )

expatinscotland · 08/07/2006 22:15

I make plain yoghurt in a Lakeland machine and add in my own stuff - mashed fruit when I feel sactimonious, jam from a seller at the farmer's market when I can't be arsed.

Organic to us (food safety team for a major supermarket) always meant covered in shit as they have to use some fertiliser. Any Salmonella outbreak was always from organic veg (when I was there) as they couldn't wash it as well as non-organic as they weren't allowed the chemicals either.

expatinscotland · 08/07/2006 22:29

or you can be like my dad and just grow your own fruit and veg, mostly.

Ok.... according to the which magazie a few months ago....

"if you feed your baby EXCLUSIVELY on organic jars the child WILL be malnourished"

because organic baby food is not fortified in the same way as non organic food is. The main problem is the lack of iron... cause baby food jars have such small quantites of meet in a bulk up with veg there is no where for the iron to be...

the answer has to be feed kids proper home made food

(non organic meat is full of antibitoics and growth hormones etc that you wouldnt want to be feeding such a young baby either!)

Hattie05 · 09/07/2006 21:03

NannyL, its yogurts being discussed here - not baby jars!!

Mojomummy · 09/07/2006 21:21

we tend to eat organic most of the time - my MIL doesn't get it either - she thinks it's weird I pay £5 + for an organic chicken, when she can BOGOF for 99p at Tescos

Ask her what she thinks goes into organic yogurts & what she thinks goes into non organic - that should shut her up.

Or you could say, if I can't pronounce it, I don't eat it
