DS wants to make a christmas cake and ice it and decorate with a christmasy theme etc... I loved doing this each year as a child and think it would be lovely to do and take to family over Christmas...however he doesnt like fruit cake!

so what else as an alternative can we do, and decorate with big swirly icing - dont think you can use thick swirly icing can you on a sponge cake? btw he loves chocolate cake?

I was going to suggest a Buche de Noel SmileCake

We did a Christmas tree - made a basic sponge in a large baking tray (the kind that comes with your oven, iykwim?), then cut it into the shape of a tree, decorated with green icing (brown for the trunk) and lots of sweets etc for the baubles.

I always do gingerbread houses with my nieces and nephews. They have great fun icing them and sticking sweets on. You can get "flat pack" versions from ikea or they are pretty easy to make your own.

Buche de Noel is the French traditional Christmas chocolate log.
