I am relying on you knowledgeable MNers! We are having MIL, FIL, SIL, BIL and two cousins over to us the day before our DS' 4th birthday so this will be our celebration of his birthday with them as they will be at work on his actual birthday.

I had some really good ideas on another thread when I asked what on earth I could do with them (they tend to sit on the sofa and ignore DS while they talk about their own interests!!!! aaaagh!)
So on advice, I decided on a picnic at our local park.

I want to do all the food and drinks and wondered if any of you have wonderful ideas for food to take that works really well for picnics...I know that DS' cousins get an awful lot of sweets and at the parties of theirs we've been to there has been the staple bowls of crisps, cocktail sausages and cheese and pineappe!!!!!! gah! I want to give them stuff they will eat but refuse to go down this road!!

Help!

various dips with pitta bread/bread sticks/raw veg
pasta salad/couscous salad
chicken drumstcks/wings
mini quiches.
cherries/strawberies/rasperberies/maybe on skewers to look actractive with a chocolate dip ( wonderfully messy
flapjack
smoked salmon + cream cheese pinwheels, or in a sandwich

thanks Octavia! Will definitely go for the cherries, rasps and strawbs as DS loves these and I can make a big, delicious bowl for people to dip into (think I'll avoid cocktail sticks as DS cousins are young and don't think they could be trused not to stab eachother!)

also love the idea of chicken drumsticks and dips with breadsticks and raw veg...

thanks!
