Kitchen tasks you loathe even though you like to cook

Cutting broccoli. Those little buds get everywhere and prove resistant to removal by wet or dry cloth.
Nigel Slater once said that anything which involved retrieving a heavy pan made his heart sink a little. I so get that.

I recently bought an enormous chopping board. Broccoli buds now hold no fear for me. Smile

The thing I hate most, which luckily I don't do very often, is the soaking of rice sticks or rice noodles. It never works. NEVER. It will become too soggy, or it will remain crunchy, it will become a giant clump. It just doesn't work. Harrumph.

GingerBeerAndTinnedPeaches · 17/09/2013 13:31

Cutting tomatoes. The juice makes my skin itch and the gloopy seeds remind me of tiny loose eyeballs. I have to suck it up though as I love tomatoes (but use tinned in cooking, raw for salads or for stuffing)

mamij · 17/09/2013 13:38

Scaling fish! Love salmon with skin on, but I have to scale myself - yuck!

nemno · 17/09/2013 13:43

Oh yes, enough pan drawers that you never have to stack/unstack anything would be fantabulous.

Not fond of chopping things like nuts or grating anything. Or tin lining. I need a sous chef.

GingerBeerAndTinnedPeaches · 17/09/2013 13:56

When I forget to ask the butcher to 'deal with' the chicken and I open the bag and the head and neck swing out at me. Then sticking my hand up its bum and removing the various organs. Ugh. After 14 years in France I still sometimes forget, though most seem to chop the head and neck off nowadays before putting it in the bag.

JamNan · 17/09/2013 17:50

Scaling fish. Double Yuck! Where to put the scales?
Disposing of coffee grouts the bastard gritty bits go everywhere
Cutting out the green bit on tomatoes where the calyx was.
Disposing of fatty tissue and blood when preparing meat.

The skins of garlic annoy me - I don't know why.

I reckon these are just gripes:
Reloading the dishwasher before running it because DH is spatially inept
Rearranging everything DH has put away in cupboards! He's lived on a boat for God's sake! He's tidy at work. Why can't he be logical about storage at home?

JamNan · 17/09/2013 17:53

I am not a tidy person by the way Confused

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/09/2013 17:55

Peeling potatoes
Grating cheese
Getting rid of all the bits from the chopping board, after cutting a load of vege.

But the one I hate more than any other is whipping cream with a hand whisk!

RippingYarns · 17/09/2013 17:56

peeling potatoes and washing up the pan after boiling them

the day i found frozen mash was like an epiphany for me Grin

Itsjustafleshwound · 17/09/2013 17:56

Peeling garlic and then having to clean the press.
Cleaning up the porridge pot

stella69x · 17/09/2013 17:59

Peeling potatoes, I loathe it to a point where I just don't therefore mash rarely happens much to the dc's disappointment! Boiled or roasted with skins on on this house. In my defence they do say most of the vitamins are just under the skin.
Also swede same problem so I cheat and buy the ore prep'd stuff

JamNan · 17/09/2013 18:09

Skimming off the fatty bits from the surface of meat that's boiling

NoComet · 17/09/2013 18:17

Onions, they don't just make me cry, they HURT.

really annoying because I love eating them.

MajesticWhine · 17/09/2013 18:22

Agree with washing up porridge saucepan - hate that.
De-skinning tomatoes is a yawn. Also hate peeling and cutting anything large like swede.

BerryLellow · 17/09/2013 18:25

Chopping onions and/or garlic. It's just a massive ball ache as far as I'm concerned!

Which is annoying as it's the basis of most of the things I cook ffs.

curlyclaz13 · 17/09/2013 18:30

you can have mash without peeling, chop them small and use a ricer Smile
garlic skin sticks to everything.
handling raw meat Sad

grating cheese, I use the grater on the processor if it is a reasonable amount now.

DaleyBump · 17/09/2013 18:34

I like peeling potatoes! I like peeling most things but that's just because I couldn't afford a good potato peeler for ages and had to use a knife. It's a total novelty now!

I absolutely can't stand doing the dishes. Loathe it. I have been known to use plastic cutlery and paper plates to avoid washing up. DP is lovely so now the deal in our flat is that I'll cook if he does the dishes. Win win Grin

mrspremise · 17/09/2013 19:13

Skinning tomatoes
Peeling potatoes
Sieving anything
Doing the effing pots Angry

sarahandemily · 17/09/2013 19:18

Making white sauce. It's a pain and yes I've tried lots of the shortcut ways and think they are all a pain too.

gastrognome · 17/09/2013 19:22

Peeling tatties.
Wiping up grease spatters from around the hob after frying something.
Sifting flour or icing sugar (it goes everywhere!)

Bicnod · 17/09/2013 19:30

Grating carrots. Hate hate hate it Angry

TheArmadillo · 17/09/2013 19:37

Making mashed potatoes.

I will spend 3 days preparing food for a party but I will not make mashed potatoes. I hate it. I dislike preparing potatoes in general and we don't have them very often. I buy posh pre-made mash. I make most things myself and am happy to spend hours in the kitchen. But not mashed potatoes.

PestoSwimissimos · 17/09/2013 19:39

Hate cleaning the grill

PestoSwimissimos · 17/09/2013 19:40

Ditto the oven

Helish · 17/09/2013 19:40

Lining cake tins, love baking but loathe this part of it along with buttering said tins
