And should I defrost them first or can I add them to the pan frozen?

Blackberry chutney? Interesting. Would you share your recipe?
And yes, no reason not to use from frozen - they'll defrost in seconds.

It's an apple and blackberry one I saw Lorraine Pascal cooking this morning

1kg Bramelys
300g finely sliced onions
275g granulated sugar
150ml balsamic vinegar
2 twists of black pepper
2 tsps ground cinnamon

Heat on medium. Mix together gently. Leave to simmer for 35 mins stirring occasionally.

Add 300g blackberries and simmer for 10 mins.

When apple and onion is soft, and its thick and syrupy spoon into jars.

Sounds nice - thanks. Planning on blackberrying tomorrow (weather permitting) - I might save some back to try the chutney.
