Recipe books that just don't 'work' for you

Every time I bake one of the cake or biscuit recipes in the Evelyn Rose The New Complete International Jewish Cookbook it's a (tasty) disaster. There always seems to be something wrong in the proportions of ingredients or length of time in the oven. I'm sure it's not just me, as I follow recipes from other books and get decent results.

Does anyone else have this problem? Have I got a duff edition?
