Anyone eaten out-of-date creme fraiche and lived to tell the tale?

I've just made a gorgeous quiche lorraine. same recipe I always use, with pancetta, gruyerre and creme fraiche. Tasted the mixture, thought it was a little different but not unpleasant.

Just chucked the empty pot in the bin and noticed to my horror that the use by date was July 14th. And it had been slightly opened. And it said on the pot not to exceed the use by date. Confused

Have I got to chuck the whole thing away? WIll it make me puke all night if I eat it?

Obviously need to check the contents of the fridge a bit more thoroughly. Blush

all the time

if it tastes ok, it goes in - record so far is a 2mth OOD natural yogurt

if it tasted 'a little different' though and it was already opened...not so sure i'd use it tbh

Oh frequently! It's not the same as cream, you can eat it for WEEKS.

You'd smell it if it was properly off.

Even if it tastes like cottage cheese it should be OK.

I always rely on the taste test

It should be fine. It would have green lumps if it had gone bad - I once gave DS a bowl of yummy yoghut from a large pot and he ate it before I noticed the green mould down the sides of the pot. He was absolutely fine!

Two months past sell by must be some kind of record (although in our family we say that the 'use by' date is seen as a challenge to my sister).

totally fine. creamy stuff just goes cheesy and yucky, it won't make you ill. I reckon use by dates are pretty much always a con: if it stinks, don't eat it. Otherwise it'll be fine...

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 19/08/2013 22:00

Well it didn't stink and I don't think it was a different colour. Haven't actually tried it yet as I made it just before I went out. Will have a bit I morrow and let you know how it goes!
