Foil dishes in the microwave

If I have something that is frozen and is in a foil dish or wrapped in tin foil I just bung it in the microwave for a minute or two, likewise if I've heated something in the oven in a foil dish and it's just not quite hot enough I finish it in the microwave.

Husband and mother say I shouldn't do this. I've done it for years with no effect on microwave or quality of food.

I guess what I am asking is, do other people do this.kkk

No no no, never put any metal in the microwave. Are you mad? I had a microwave go bonkers because I forgot that MIL's plates had a thin metal trim. Sparks and bangs everywhere.

I once left a small scrap of foil on the bottom of a salmon fillet that went into the microwave. Caused a big bang and the death of the microwave Sad

Youhave been very lucky if you've not killed a microwave yet!

YoniBottsBumgina · 09/08/2013 18:21

What?? You can't put foil in a microwave, no. Doesn't it spark like crazy? For a whole minute or two? Confused

Do you have one of those convector oven microwaves?

I've just a normal (in fact it wasn't even expensive) microwave, never noticed sparks or a smell.

Does anyone else put foil in the microwave?

No, they don't! There's a very good reason why the instructions say not to, and most microwaves also have a label somewhere saying not to use foil. It's not safe and can cause the microwave to short out.

GiraffeAHolic · 09/08/2013 19:36

NO Shock I didn't realise that the different brand of butter I'd bought had a foil lined wrapper, plenty of flames when I attempted to soften it in the microwave Blush

MelanieCheeks · 09/08/2013 19:37

Nope. No metal, not even tinfoil, in a microwave.

It's to do with what the microwaves will vibrate, ie heat up.

YoniBottsBumgina · 09/08/2013 19:39

That's really, really bizarre. I once put some in by accident and it sparked, scared the shit out of me, I pressed cancel straight away and then was scared to take it out in case it was extra hot/electrified Blush

YoniBottsBumgina · 09/08/2013 19:40

I don't even put cups with gold or silver edging in the microwave - was always warned not to.

DizzyPurple · 09/08/2013 19:41

Someone at work put a foil wrapped butter in the microwave and it burst into flames!
No, don't do it!

Nomnew · 09/08/2013 19:44

And never like me switch on your microwave when it's empty (meal was sitting on the counter doh!)

It buggers it completely! I think there should be a warning sound that comes on when this happens as I can't be the only absent minded sleep deprived person to have done this can I?

YoniBottsBumgina · 09/08/2013 19:48

This is why you shouldn't!

OutragedFromLeeds · 09/08/2013 19:48

You must have a magic microwave OP! Even a tiny piece of foil makes them spark normally.

PseudoBadger · 09/08/2013 19:49

No. It's stupid. kkk

GibberTheMonkey · 09/08/2013 19:53

I remember reading that its actually ok to put some metals in the microwave. Something to do spoons and their shape...
Going to go and google

I think the newer ones are more forgiving to metal. I try to avoid it, but the foil dishes I use for freezing say that they can be used in microwaves newer than

OutragedFromLeeds · 09/08/2013 20:20

oh I see lunatic, easy mistake to make! Grin

CatsWearingTutus · 09/08/2013 20:24

Our combi microwave with grill and convection oven thingy we got last year says in the instructions we can put a small amount of metal in even when using the microwave only function. When using the combi function which is oven or grill with microwave as well at 30% power we can even use metal racks. Seems like the technology has changed.
