1980's party - what food?

I'm having a housewarming bash on Saturday, 1970s -80s style - everyone's dressing up (or down - jeans and band t-shirts were very 80's!) and we're going to boogie to Soft Cell, Genesis, Queen, Madonna and the like.

Menu so far is:

Cheese & pineapple on sticks
Sausages on sticks
Mini quiche
Mini pizza
Bridge rolls with prawn marie rose and egg mayonnaise (not mixed, obviously)
Vol au vents with prawn marie rose and egg mayonnaise
Celery with Primula squeezy cheese (by request!)
Silverskin onions
Mini gherkins
Tomatoes
Cucumber (cut in arty-farty spirals if I can be arsed)

Dessert: Homemade black forest gateaux
Walls Viennettas
Matchmakers
Floaty boozy coffees

I'm not bothering with fancy cocktails because after one drink everyone will revert to their favourite vodka/orange or wine anyway. But I am investing in a bottle or two of Lambrusco, the height of sophistication. Grin

Anything I've obviously missed? Bearing in mind I have three coeliac friends so anything involving pastry or bread has to be completely homemade so I don't really want to add anything extra like that.

Is this thread any help?

ChunkyPickle · 27/06/2013 09:13

You will make sure that the cheese and pineapple on sticks are stuck into half a grapefruit wrapped in tinfoil won't you? It wouldn't be right otherwise.

VerySmallSqueak · 27/06/2013 09:14

Oh, black forest gateau and viennettas were the height of posh!

It's obviously going to be a naice party.

Spam sandwiches?
Fizzy drinks with a scoop of ice cream on top?

Anyone you know got a Soda stream?

Cloudkitten · 27/06/2013 09:19

peeriebear · 27/06/2013 09:26

Cakes with tiny ball bearings on for decoration :o

Wineandchoccy · 27/06/2013 09:31

Pasta salad with tricolour pasta seemed to be at every birthday party I went to in the 80's

Make sure you make a hedgehog with your cheese on sticks!

My colleague says Doritos cool wave and mayonnaise first appeared in the 80's.

Blatherskite · 27/06/2013 09:32

Space Invader crisps.
Arctic Roll
Babycham
Fosters
Findus crispy pancakes
Prawn cocktails in champagne glasses with shelled prawns hanging over the side.
Popping candy

MadBusLady · 27/06/2013 09:32

Oh. From the title I was going to say iced rings and pink wafers. That's what I had at parties in the 1980s Grin

CheeseStrawWars · 27/06/2013 09:40

Monster Munch or Space Raiders crisps!

Those chewy Wham bars.

oopslateagain · 27/06/2013 09:54

Oh my cheese on sticks will definitely be stuck in half a grapefruit tastefully covered in tinfoil.

Furball thanks for the link! I did a MN search but didn't find that one.

Babycham - yes yes yes! Very naice.

I wish I knew someone with a Soda Stream.

I was toying with the idea of putting a loaf of bread and a plate of cheese & ham slices next to a sandwich toaster - posh 80's DIY buffet! Grin

Just Brazils.

christina71 · 27/06/2013 15:55

Disco crisps definitely! And some space dust sweets - you know the stuff that goes crackle in your mouth - I found that it's still sold in some little corner shops. Very nostalgic!

I recommend the Pet Shop Boys for your playlist too. Have fun! ;)

Lilymaid · 27/06/2013 16:06

Pate (Brussels or Ardennes, not some fancy sort) seemed to be the height of sophistication in the 80s.
We always seemed to drink Hirondelle wine - hopefully now a thing of the past - you really don't want to be cruel to your guests. A bottle of Blue Nun/Mateus Rose displayed prominently would add an appropriate touch.

Allalonenow · 27/06/2013 16:36

Agree that paté and pasta salad were very 80s, also stuffed eggs and tomatoes. There was always a "hot" dish of luke warm beef stew served with rice. Lots of fussy preparation, like sliced ham rolled around spears of tinned asparagus.

Your menu sounds great oops, what about some mustard and cress and grated cheese rolls and some chicken drumsticks, maybe some sausage rolls?

burberryqueen · 27/06/2013 16:42

some cheesecake type dessert covered in sliced kiwi fruit
Cherry B and lemonade
Dubonnet
Garlic bread

oopslateagain · 27/06/2013 16:47

Pasta salad is good - I can get gluten free pasta spirals, not tricolor but I'm sure I could add some food coloring to the water (yuck!) Wink

I can't face making yet more GF puff pastry so no sausage rolls!

Ooh Allalonenow you've reminded me - ham rolled up with a cocktail stick shoved through! And mustard and cress on everything because it looks, you know, 'fancy'. Hmm Grin
