Sausages on a George Foreman Grill - Idiot proof guide needed

I have recently got a George Foreman grill which is great. Last night I tried to cook some sausages on it. Even though I turned them half way through cooking they came out almost black on the outside and still a bit pink on the inside. I tried cutting them in half but they just looked like squashed fingers.

I feel silly asking but does anyone know where I might be going wrong. I wanted to take the grill with us when we go camping etc so there will be a lot of sausages/burgers etc. on the menu (good quality ones of course!)

may sound daft but are you using the heat adjuster (slidy thing on the side)? I only ask cos I wasn't and had similar experience!

now you come to mention it - no I wasn't. I just had a look at it and i've got it on the highest setting! No wonder I cremated the sausages. Thank you.
