When to add mussels to fish stew?

I'm cooking for some friends tonight and have a lovely sounding fish stew recipe.
But I could do witj some advice please...

The recipe doesn't have mussels in but I love them and want to add some.
At what point should I add them?

And will I just wash them and put them straight into the stew and try to spot/ remove any unopened ones before serving or cook them first and then add them?

I'm bringing the meal to someone else's house so the less last minute cooking needed the better. I'd like to bring it in a big pot and just warm it through (and prob throw in some cooked prawns at this point)

Thanks for any suggestions.

Cook them separately as usual... and add them once the stew is ready to serve.

Most of the recipes I've seen make the stew base and add the mussels right before serving, cook them through, and serve straight away.

like this

I would think you could easily make the stew without the mussels at home, then when you reheat at your friends house stick the uncooked mussels and the prawns in for the last 10-12 mins to cook through so they're tender.

Thank you both.
As it happens, Tesco had no raw mussels. Or clams which I might've used.
So I got some nice big juicy raw king prawns to beef it up a bit.
