What to add to this recipe to give a bit of...zing?

My lovely DH cooked me one of Jamie Oliver's '15 minute recipes' tonight, it was feta salad filo parcels. Basically: chickpeas, spinach, feta, lemon zest and a tiny bit of paprika, parcelled up in filo and oven baked. They were vey nice, but slightly underwhelming (and too big - we'll make the parcels smaller next time). Both of us agreed that it needed a bit more spice or...something to give a bit of oohmph.
What do you think would be good to add to this? - I'm not very good at knowing which tastes/spices/seasonings combine well.
Thanks, lovely mumsnetters. xxx

Are you really meant to do all that in 15 mins? Blimey.

I'd say just more paprika - or pimenton, which is a hotter, smokier paprika. Lemon juice as well as zest?

I love chickpeas, but do think that they need a lot of seasoning. So that, ad what Hassled said!

Try some za'atar.

sarahandduck · 23/02/2013 20:14

Or ras-el-hanout

Lafaminute · 23/02/2013 20:15

chilli flakes and a dollop of ready made humous???? or semi-dried tomatoes??

TheOneWithTheNameChange · 23/02/2013 20:16

Harissa?

nextphase · 23/02/2013 20:17

Nutmeg!

Abigail9580 · 23/02/2013 20:18

Chillie flakes. Or fresh coriander and lime instead of lemon?

Lattetogo · 23/02/2013 20:18

How about Sumac? Astringent, sour, smokey, and earthy at the same time, sumac is a very complex spice. Key will be adding the right amount.

linspins · 23/02/2013 21:18

Blimey, I'm going to have to look some of that up! I do know nutmeg...
Hassled, yeah, all the recipes take way more than 15 mins. Don't know who Jamie is trying to kid.

Well, lots of suggestions to think about. Thanks all!
