I've just made it as per the good housekeeping recipe- philly lemon juice and honey, but it just tastes like, well, philly. I've tasted others which really are something pf there own...does anyone know? Thanks very much. Flippin' cake took an hour and a half just to make- I really don't want it to just taste of philly!!!

icing sugar .. keep putting it in until it tastes better .. then add a little lemon to give it a zing

Oooh you are a goodun twiglett...will go try. If I'm not impressed, I'll just add more icing sugar and sit with the bowl and a spoon! Sod the cake!

phily and butter works a treat! About 1/2 and 1/2 is what I usually do mixed in with the icing sugar..helps if you get a nice creamy butter too and could also add grated carrot for a rather crazed/fetching, depending on taste, stripy orange look

I made a carrot cake last weekend and the icing used marscapone with ginger + orange juice (ginger juice was got from the grated ginger used in the cake) with icing sugar. It is delicious and doesn't taste a bit like cheese!!!

That's a good one Jen. Mascarpone has hardly any flavour so a great base. Hmmm wish I'd thought of that one. Cake was awful anyway. It took 2 and a half hours not the 1-1and a quarter, centre was soggy and raw, and the top tasted of philly and...icing sugar! Was too wet to add any more lemon juice. I'm still going to take the remainder to my sister's tomorrow!!!
