Our friends have fifty-ish people over every November for fireworks. They do a load of baked potatoes then some grated cheese and baked beans to put in them.

Or baked potatoes and a homemade veg.chili would be cheaper.

How about Indian food?

Lentil dahl.

Some sort of pea and potato curry.

Rice.

Iceland frozen indian snacks (you get 75 for £4!)

Not sure about pots... all that in and out of the oven. Am prone to a red face as it is. Dal good. Maybe homemade rotis? Will look into that.

If you have a local Asian supermarket you should be able to buy roti for arount 50p a packet and pompodoms the same, much cheaper than supermarkets and less faff than making your own. We do our pompodoms in microwave now and much less fuss than frying.

Yes to Indian: cauliflower and spinach dal; Bombay potatoes (not too spicy); raita; spicy chutney; nan or roti. All can be done in advance and heated up on the hob.

I would make a soup ( butternut squash/ lentil ), maybe two types. With some rolls

Look up chocolate cherry trifle for desert

Maybe some nuts/ crisps to snack

If you are likely to have kids who aren't going to eat spicy food (there are always a few) then may be worth buying some Aldi frozen pizza to supplement: your budget of £1 a head should cover this if the other food is cheap bulk buy? Aldi do 3xlarge margharita pizzas in the frozen section for £2.59 and they are really nice. If you can float the boat out to 99p each they do spinach and ricotta, mushroom pizza, three cheese, and mediterranean veg pizzas which are even bettter (all in the freezer cabinet). And you could look for garlic bread on special: everyone likes garlic bread....

Think you're right about kids and pizza Aethelfleda. Multitask - yes will go to brixton for my red lentils/squash/rotis. now thinking of doing Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall butternut curry - all gingery and yum.

Have you got a slowcooker or could you borrow a couple?

Veggie curry in one and veggie chilli in the other; big bowl of rice; big bowl of green salad; rolls or French bread; grated cheese; soured cream; minty yoghurt - Bob's yer uncle.

Deffo ask people to bring a bottle and maybe make a couple of jugs of Sangria or Pimms yourself - goes further than wine.

Pud - icecream in cones for the kids (saves on bowls) and a couple of trifles for the adults.
