Could be haddock or coley. Are there any lines/splodges on it?

AutumnGlory · 08/11/2012 11:52

I have just opened the packet properly and it is looking like filets. There is a lot of ice in the bag, it wasn't stored properly - H's fault. Can see lines or splodgges because of the ice. Shall I put in the microwave?

Well I love IDing fish! But if you're only going to bin it, don't stink out your microwave :o

AutumnGlory · 08/11/2012 11:57

I would use if I could. I said I would bin it coz somebody else told above fish shouldn't t be in the freezer for more than a month and I'm sure it has been there for much much more longer.....what do you think?

how about lettng it defrost to see what the smell is like? and then you can make a decision.

PseudoBadger · 08/11/2012 12:01

Well it's not dangerous - the only thing you're going to lose is quality/aesthetics. So should be ok in a fish cake, pie etc, not as a fillet on its own.

Ok. Please check the thread later

So today at 12 I left the frozen fish outside ine the balcony ( inside its packing and container ) and totally forgot about it until now. I got it now, it is smelling fine and I put in the fridge. But I can't still identify and it is cut in fillets. Any idea if the fish is still safe to eat and what I can do with it?

This is haddock - grey with black line
This is coley - grey with white line
Either of these?

slartybartfast · 08/11/2012 20:32

wrap in foil with butter and herbs and bake in oven?

AutumnGlory · 08/11/2012 20:37

I'm more inclined to say it is haddock. I will probably make fish cake than, I don't like fish pies.

Actually thinking now about cooking kidgeree as I love rice but would it work if the fish is not smoked?

Fish soup would work. My mum did one with 8oz onions fried, add 1lb of potatoes, fish stock - probably a pint - glass of white wine, when pots are done either blend it or not depending on preference, then throw in your fish until cooked - add parsley if you have any, there you go!
