Millionaires shortbread - I always seem to burn the caramel...

Can someone please take me through step-by-step. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

I do my caramel in the microwave, just heat, stir, heat, stir until it has gone dark and thick.

Buy it already made.

It is slightly softer but my dc prefer it.
