Can anyone recommend a good set of knives please

Dh has just told me he wants a good knife set for Christmas so if anyone can recommend a good, not too kerching set that would be most helpful.

Think I'd go for just one or two but really good ones. The cheaper knives I've got have all got blunt very quickly, and never we're as good. Expensive ones feel so much better balanced and should last years. I have a wusthof classic cooks knife which I use all the time, not much need for anything else!

We've a full set of Analon knives. We have some individual ones too. But, they don't need sharpening much either. They sell them in all the department stores, and probably all good cook shops hth.

I'm watching this thread as I'd like to get some really good knives for Xmas too. We have the usual collection of crappy old ones bought years ago.

We have several Wusthof knives too. They are great.

Raymond Blanc 6 piece Analon and 3 piece.

Henckel 3 piece starter set is a good set. Keep the knives sharp by drawing along a sharpening steel a few times each time you use them and will never have the problem of dull edge. Best to wash and dry carefully by hand, don't put in dishwasher as that can dull them. Must be careful not to let them touch any other metal so quicker and easier to hand wash.

Can usually get them around the amazon price in local dept store around sale time. Best to try out in person though as weighting may not suit you. Several different styles and brands - Henckel and Wusthof are pretty similar though. Just down to personal preference.

Thanks for the advice, that Wusthof looks great but I'm not sure I could justify paying £80 for one knife! Unless I win the lottery then my chef could have one!

It's a lot of money, yes, but I'm a firm believer in quality over quantity... And if you have a good knife it will last you for years and years to come. The first time I used a really good knife was such an eye-opener, your life just becomes so much easier, besides, I've hurt myself really badly in the past using dull knives. It really is worth the investment. Get one good chefs knife, one pairing knife, one serrated pairing knife and a bread knife, you don't really need anything else!

We have a mixture of knife brands, but my favourites are Globals. They stay sharp, their handles are not slippery when you have wet hands and they look good. I'd love a whole set of them.

That's the one tribpot,love it and hardly need any other knives and per use is worth it if.Have a much cheaper bread knife and paring knife which are ok. I had bought a sabatier small cooks knife, fairly cheap but it is near impossible to keep sharp and now never used. They are bloody expensive though!

I like Sabatier. Mostly use a small vegetable knife, a 7" cooks knife and a larger one with a wider blade for heavy-duty chopping. He'll need a block for storage and a good sharpener.

I'm a professional and i got a lot of knifes.
My favourite is actually Wusthof classic, great value for the money.
