Amateur baker in need of icing tips!

I am currently trying to improve my baking skills (nothing to do with GB bake off of course!) and I have been concentrating on a simple sponge cake. I have read loads of helpful tips for the cake on mn and my sponge is slowly improving, but I wondered if anyone has tips on how to get a nice, smooth glacé icing? Mine tends to be too runny or lumpy and I can never seem to get a good spreadable consistency. Any ideas please??

There are lots of great tutorials on YouTube if you have a look.

Firstly, add the water by the drop, not the spoonful. And use silver spoon fondant icing, it gives a much smoother coverage

When adding the water, stir it constantly, and work at any lumps withthe back of the spoon before adding more water. Lumps are easier to deal with in less fluid

It also works better if you use boiling water rather than cold.
