Can I cook paella in the oven?

I need to go out for an hour or so and then come home and have food ready straight away. Can I fry ingredients (apart from rice) and then just put it all a casserole dish with the rice and stock and leave it to cook in the oven?

Will I burn the rice and come back to a dry horrible mess or will it be ok?

Any advice or tips welcome.

No.

How about a casserole? Everything the same but potatoes or pasta instead of rice?

Oh dear! Will it really not work?

I wouldn't chance that.

I've done paella in the oven before and it's worked fine but only took about 30 minutes. Leaving it in there for an hour probably would dry it out.

See my 'Help Me With Dinner' thread - it worked for me but I agree that an hour would be too long.

I did it!

Well I cooked it on the hob until it was nearly cooked, then turned it off and put the lid on. When I came home I heated it for 10 minutes on the hob and it was fine. I was a bit worried about the rice but it was ok and nobody died.

I make a risotto/paella that works fab in the oven, you can find the recipe here. I have even cooked it for dinner parties! Its my DHs favourite dinner.
