I think the point is equal volumes of each so if you haven't got a cup measure on your measuring jug then just use a mug or small bowl full of each.

8 oz

ChippyMinton · 02/09/2012 18:46

236ml

1 cup of butter is about 225 g

1 cup plain flour is about 125g

1 cup caster sugar is about 225g

I'd guess you have more than one cup of flour in the recipe?

0lympia · 02/09/2012 18:48

yeah about 225gms. for some reason, Nigella Lawson uses 'cups' in her recipes, I was just taking her at her word and throwing in a cup, roughly. I thought this is all very vague!

American cups are different to austrailian cups are English cups I think).

Key point as has already been said is equal volumes.

ps, i later noticed that my measuring jug has a mark saying one cup on the side of it, alongside all the other measurements. had never noticed it (until after i made the cake!)

I think mine was wrong..........

mamababa · 02/09/2012 18:51

In the US a cup is 250ml. Based on 1ml =!1g that should help.

nannycook · 02/09/2012 18:54

Thats always bugged me when i see mearsurments in cups, grrr. thank you everyone for converting it.

Well I made the mixture (subject of a separate thread!) but have ended up with masses. Five cups of flour two cups of sugar, one and a half of butter plus eggs and salt and vanilla extract. I think I have enough for about 100 cookies and the first batch didn't taste great Sad
