Best place to buy fresh fruit, veg and fish in South East London

I had to go to Woolwich Arsenal for work recently and was amazed at the concentration of excellent food shops and stalls in a tiny area.

That's too far for me to go regularly, but there may be other good places more accessible from Bromley - can anyone recommend some?

I'm ashamed of my dull cooking and reliance on Tesco, want to refresh our diet. And after eating perfect fresh fruit in Italy on holiday, would like to do the same at home.

Have you tried any of the farmer's markets? I think there might be one in Bromley. There definitely is in Peckham (you could go to the Persian shop while you're there). Or Dulwich - there is lots of shopping there too. Or you could start at the mother ship of Borough Market, but that's less of a market shop and more of a day out, unless you can go during the weekdays it's open instead of the weekend.

I discovered this shop recently in Penge and there's one in Sydenham (I've not been to that one though):

great for olives, breads, deli stuff. Worth a look if you're in the area.

Maybe Lewisham High Street might be more accessible for you? Lots of fruit and veg stalls and fish every day except Sunday. Various Asian shops. A big Turkish supermarket (next to Morley Road) with lots of fresh stuff. Towards the end of the day they are virtually giving fruit and veg away.

The route from Bromley to Lewisham is well served by buses. If you come by car you can park on Saturday for an all-day rate of £2 in the multi-storey car park above the Lewisham Centre (which has more standard high street-type shops such as Sainsbury and M&S).

Borough Market is great but expensive - the opposite end of the spectrum to Lewisham.

Just to clarify - I meant the stalls (not the Turkish supermarket) are virtually giving it away.

Croydon market is very good for cheap fruit and veg, Brixton village too for a fantastic variety of food shops, stalls and restaurants.
