I used to live in southwest of USA so could freely get hold of mexican ingredients but here in UK they all seem so expensive!
anyone know of the best (cheapest) place to get hold of different varieties of dried chillies etc?
cheers!

asian stores!
or the 'oriental' aisle in the supermarket.
they have all the paprika powders, chilies, coriander etc.

Morrisons do a good range of spices.

I have loads of asian stores nearby but none of them sell the types of chillies I need (Guajillo, ancho, chipotle etc) I have tried my big sainsburys but no luck there - will try morrisons, never go in there but there is one near me.
I can get hold of the ingredients online but wondering if anyone aware of anywhere cheaper?

chilies are fairly easy to grow if you can get your hands on some seeds.

I shop here. Am I paying too much?

jobnockey · 01/08/2012 11:40

no that seems about the going rate SurgeonsMate...

£3 for 60g of chiles just seems soooo much money! Might have to bite the bulletI think and treat myself though. That place yuo've linked to sells these littl cans of roasted green chillies which I've never been able to find elsewhere. Yum.

I've used scorchio in the past, good service :)

NettOlympicSuperstar · 01/08/2012 18:15

I've this site bookmarked, though not used it yet.
I do know people who have though, and have had good service. I really want a tortilla press.
I want to start exploring central/south American food next, as it's completely alien to me.

I have a friend in California who sends me boxes of various chillies now and again. www.coolchile.co.uk/ is your best bet imo

jobnockey · 02/08/2012 15:50

Oh yes - I put a tortilla press on my amazon wishlist just before my birthday but no one took the hint! Have placed an order with that website so will let you know what its like!

luisgarcia - i have never thought of asking my New Mexican friends to send chillies over but that may be the way forward!

I'd second cool chile co. really quick, reasonable postage (by weight in bands) and brilliant choice of Mex stuff. The chipotles in adobo is awesome.

Sunnydelight · 05/08/2012 23:00

Seriously, chillies are really easy to grow (and are beautiful plants). We have a selection in the freezer from the last harvest and it's great to have a choice always available.
