I gather one can cook a whole chook in the slow cooker and it will be all tender and juicy and lovely.

So,I have the chicken and the slow cooker and want to do this tomorrow. It's a 1.6kg bird, how long should this take roughly?

Do you add water or any herbs/bayleaves/butter/seasoning or anything or just lob it in au naturel?

And any good recipes for leftovers? (is just me, DH and 10 month baby so should be a fair bit left)

I just sling mine in, no water or anything.
Chuck it in in the morning on low, will be done by tea time.
Its always got loads of juices by the time its cooked.

Smells divine btw.

Right. I have this sussed. Ball up about 5 pieces of foil each about 5 cm diameter and place in bottom of slow cooker. Spread so when you put the chicken on top it doesn't touch the bottom and doesn't touch the lid (squash balls a bit if it does) make sure chicken in clean and dry. Season. Put on high for an hour then turn to low for 6 hrs or so. Usual checks to make sure it's cooked through. Comes out v moist with crispy top.
You can add veg etc but I find it's too greasy.
Leftovers: my favourite is enchiladas which is pretty easy and you can pad out with veg to make it go further. Also curry or stir fry. Chicken and brocolli pasta (kids love).
Also you can easily make brith in the slow cooker from the bones and a great veg and lentil soup with the broth.
We cook a chicken a week and can make it go a long way.

I put some peeled spuds in with mine and then take out later and finish them off in the oven for roasties - yummy.

Just reminded me to put mine in now ready to switch on in the morning. Off to do balls :-)

Fantastic thank you so much, I will remember the balls! And enchiladas sounds a lot more interesting than chicken sarnies Grin

I will test this out on Tuesday and let you know how the foil balls worked...

I sit mine on some halved onions then whizz any juices with a hand blender to make gravy. Sometimes I sprinkle a chick stock cube on top top or some balsamic vinegar to give it a it of colour.

Leftovers I make chicken biryani
