defrosted an unopened pack of sausages today and gave them to the kids for tea. They enjoyed them. Cooking the rest for DH I noticed the BB date is 1 December and it says freeze and consume within 1 month. Am really worried I've poisoned the kids

i leave things in the freezer for ages then eat them, im fine

as long as noones being sick im sure your just helping them to build an immune system ;)

HappyGirlNow · 14/06/2012 08:11

As long as they were frozen by the use by date they'll be absolutely fine.

Uberly · 14/06/2012 11:11

I'd say that they would be fine. If frozen, I've eaten food past the recommended storage date (e.g. a month)

On a similar note though....Your post reminded me that I have some fresh sausages in the fridge with a use by date of yesterday! I forgot to freeze them. Do you reckon I could freeze them today and they would be ok?

I figure we're technically 11 hours into the next day, surely they can't have gone that bad yet?!!

What do you think?

tomatoface · 14/06/2012 11:55

well nobody was sick in the night thank god, so sausages frozen for 6 months are fine to eat!

uberly I would say they'll be fine. If in doubt, open the packet, have a sniff, if they smell ok then pop them in a freezer bag & freeze

Why would anybody be sick?
Think logically about it, what is going to happen to the sausages while frozen that would make them suddenly toxic?

The eat within one month is entirely arbitrary. You could leave them for a year or more and as long as they were not defrosted at any time they would be fine, the only thing that happens is freezer burn and a possible decrease in quality, nothing else.

And to other question...the sausages don't know the date, they are fine, and will be for another week probably. Look at them and smell them, don't rely on made up dates on the packet.

tomatoface · 14/06/2012 12:12

"the sausages don't know the date" Grin

very true though. When you buy them at the butchers there's no best before date you just have to go by look/smell

Thanks for the replies! Sniff and look is normally what I do!

Read an interesting article earlier this week (on the BBC I think?) about people ignoring use by dates and opting for sniffing and looking if gone past the date, lending people open to becoming ill. To me, it's just a bit of common sense.

Are they saying that at exactly 00:01 the following day, the food suddenly goes bad? Like JoanofNark said, the sausage doesn't know! :)

slatternlymother · 14/06/2012 19:11

Nope that's fine. Did you freeze just after purchase?

BlueChampagne · 19/06/2012 13:31

Are you dead yet?
