As the plates go whizzing by on the conveyor thingy how do you tell what the actual dish is? I am veggie so don't want to end up with a pile of unopened plates because they contain meat....

You can tell which ones just have vegetables in the middle, and you can order off the menu instead of the conveyor belt if you are not sure.

hermioneweasley · 30/05/2012 20:09

They go by quite slowly and there is a menu which explains what each one is

CMOTDibbler · 30/05/2012 20:09

You look at the menu - it has pictures of all the dishes, so you

PinkPepper · 30/05/2012 20:09

There's a menu by you and you can identify each dish pretty well as there's a picture of each one. Also you can order direct using a little doorbelly button thing. Gooooo, there's loads of nice veggie stuff (can't think of any specific things though Blush)

roguepixie · 30/05/2012 20:10

The plates go by fairly slowly so you can get a fairly good look at what is on offer. The thing to do is, when you go, grab a menu and order from there - if you like the food and go back you will get to know what you can eat and what you like to eat.

notnowImreading · 30/05/2012 20:11

Make sure you get the duck dumplings - best thing there. Delish.

teanosugar · 30/05/2012 20:12

I hate fish and am picky about meat.
When we go to yo sushi I have miso soup, firecracker rice, firecracker noodles and a bowl of fruit salad! everytime,
(drives my dh nuts -he has about 10 dishes of everything!)

NettoSuperstar · 30/05/2012 20:16

I love the seaweed salad, and the aubergine dish, both are veggie. The tofu one is best to order off the menu so it's fresh and hot.

belizabus · 30/05/2012 20:17

Yes, notnowImreading, the vegetarian OP is sure to love the duck dumplings....

Frontpaw · 30/05/2012 20:19

The menu is pretty self explanatory and there is a fair amount of veggie stuff.

Top tip - don't sit 'downstream' of a gang of 6 burly builders and a large family (who look as if the really enjoy their food). You'll get hungry! They do a seaweed salad that I would happily stab anyone with a chopstick to get to. Also nice dumplingy things (squash I think).

They often have 'specials' - cheap Mondays and set fee Wednesdays. Don't bother with dolce - they are 'an acquired taste' IMHO.

I am getting hungry now!

McPhee · 30/05/2012 20:20

Surely you can rack up quite a bill?

How does that work?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 30/05/2012 20:22

So you don't get frowned at for ordering off menu? Certainly sounds easier that way, and DD can still watch the food going by :)

OP posts:
ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 30/05/2012 20:22

And yes, this would be a major treat and we would go on an monday :)

OP posts:
PinkPepper · 30/05/2012 21:58

No it's fine to order off menu but the offer prices normally only apply to the sushi 'on the belt'

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 30/05/2012 21:59

Ah, thanks PinkPepper I hadn't considered that :(

Veggie dishes are the cheapest though.
I think the most I spent was £45, for two of us who both eat fish and meat, and we had a couple of the most expensive things and a beer.

PinkPepper · 30/05/2012 22:04

I've been to Birmingham (both) and Bristol and the staff are nice and helpful there at least, I bet if you ask them to point out veggie dishes they will. I think on Monday the plates all cost the same as the cheapest plate? Is that right? In which case a lot of veggie plates are the cheapest anyway, so you could order these ones off the menu. Think green and blue are lowest prices.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 30/05/2012 23:49

Yay! I am happy again now. We shall definitely go and try it out. Thanks for giving me the confidence (I hate the unknown)

I asked for advice on here before I went for the first time too, as I was scared of making an arse of myself, but the staff (Glasgow) were really helpful and explained how it worked.

Frontpaw · 31/05/2012 10:15

I think they now do an all you can eat for £19 or so on a wednesday. Take a doggie bag, and take the salmon for your cat!

somebloke123 · 31/05/2012 15:45

You can ask for stuff too. You don't have to restrict yourself to whatever happens to on the belt at the time.

If you ask for miso soup, you can get it refilled as many times as you want without further charge. Also if you use the water on tap (either still or sparkling) you can help yourself to as many refills as you want.

I also ask for a bowl of plain rice.

I too have found the staff very helpful.

NettoSuperstar · 31/05/2012 16:39

Last time I went, I asked about my favourite sashimi which was no longer on the menu, the waiter said it didn't sell well, so had been removed, but asked if I'd like the tilapia sashimi instead?
He was so hot friendly, I agreed, but had to be honest when he asked what I thought of it, and told him it was just a bit blah. I wasn't charged for it.
I can only speak for one branch, but they really are so friendly and helpful.
Oh, and you have to have the chocolate ganache cake. I don't have a sweet tooth, but love it.
