Anyone with experience of BBQs and big numbers? I'm looking to keep costs low but want everyone to have enough to eat. Where are the best shops... should i go to a cash and carry?

Many thanks x

Not to be a pedant but...Is it not a BBQ for 16 people? Vegetarians are people too dammitGrin

You should aim for at least 2 burgers each, some chicken wings/ribs or suchlike to nibble on, buy a separate BBQ (disposable would be fine) for the veggie food- go for bean burgers/veggie sausages or both, also make salad...

I would make the burgers myself and buy the rest from Iceland or a supermarket...

I'm so sorry if i offended any veggie brethren, you all count! I will look into finding some recipes veg/meat friendly and separate bbq is a great idea.

Not offended and also not a veggieGrin My mum is though so have hosted many a mostly meaty BBQ (i was joking earlierWink)

ask the vegetarian whether they mind the food cooked on the same grill (some do, some don't), and what they want to eat. find out if they are fish eating vegetarians (some are, some aren't). And deserts can be bbq'd too!

luisgarcia · 24/05/2012 01:37

whether or not the veggie will want food from the same grill is pretty crucial to your planning... meat gives off fat which burns which keeps the flames going. A separate bbq is not quite that simple

I'm veggie and would never eat stuff cooked on meaty grill, I would rather go hungry! I can appreciate it a PITA though, could you get a little disposable BBQ from pound land?

Westcountrylovescheese · 24/05/2012 06:54

My DH is veggie and I don't bother with veggie burgers. They taste awful and cook badly. I do veggie kebabs, halloumi, sweet corn, stuffed peppers... Actually sometimes I don't bother with meat at all so we can just use one BBQ and make food that everyone can eat.

for vegetarians, we've used grill trays a bit like this to keep the food separate, although you'd have to ask as some might not find this separate enough.
Chicken thighs are good - I get frustrated with wings because they don't have enough meat on for me - but good for kids maybe. I cook my chicken in the oven, partly cos of barbecue capacity for larger numbers but also to make sure cooked; once cooked through we put them on the BBQ for a few mins just to give it the smoky taste.
