To prepare this Meat and Potato Pie Recipe, first cut any cold cooked meat into small pieces, there may be more than one kind. Carefully remove all gristle and any stringy fat; put it in a deep baking-dish, the sides of which have been well buttered and lined with mashed potatoes, the thickness of an inch.soften a chopped red onion by frying in butter and add 1/2 can of skinned pllum tomatoes, some cold cooked rice and 3 spoonfuls of ketchup. add a pint of gravy and heat gently.
Put meat into your ptotato dish and cover with the sauce.
Add a well-beaten egg to the mashed potato, spread lightly over the top of the pie, leaving the surface rough; put bits of butter over the top and bake until well browned, which will take about twenty minutes in an oven at about 180

Thanks chapsmum... I was thinking more of a pie with pastry but this sounds so good I shall try it one night this week

I cheat and cook mince in stock, herbs etc for 10 mins then add parboiled diced spuds (about 5 mins) and just mix together and cook for another 15-20mins.

Then I make some suet pastry (recipe on back of suet box) and bake on greased baking tray for 30 mins or so til brown - very crunchy pastry - then dish up meat mix and top with some pastry.

Right I brown casserole or braising steak chopped into chunks along with garlic, onion and a few mushrooms. Then add water, mixed herbs and worcester sauce and slow cook it for a few hours (you could do this on the hob or in the oven though). When the meat is ready I boil chopped up potatoes (I don't bother to peel them) and meanwhile make shortcrust pastry using 12 oz flour and 6 oz fat. This makes plenty of pastry - you could probably use 8 and 4. Roll out the pastry and line a casserole/pie dish. Then add the meat and drained potatoes. I find if I use a slotted spoon the meat still comes with sufficient gravy to make the pie moist. Roll out a crust and put this on. Snip a hole or two in the top and bake until browned.
